Seattle's Gwen Stubbs from Lekkerlife talks about her passion for well-made garments.
Sassafras: Tell us about your designs and inspirations for them.
Gwen: I am a huge fan of fashion from the past and find so much inspiration from vintage clothing. Whether it be the sleek lines of the 20's and 30's, or the hourglass silhouette of the 50's. I feel like everything comes back anyway, so you might as well wear something classic.
Sassafras: How did you become interested in fashion design?
Gwen: I started thrift shopping when I was a young teenager, and started going to shows at the same time. I always feel like music and fashion go hand in hand and this became very clear to me when I discovered designers like Vivienne Westwood. I started making my own clothes in high school and decided to go to fashion school in my early 20's because I needed a creative outlet besides playing music.
Sassafras: What are your aspirations for your line? Where would you like to take it?
Gwen: I'm pretty happy with it right now. I am not interested in getting my designs mass produced and every garment in my line has been made by me! I would like to do more custom garments like wedding dresses. I'm at my absolute best when I'm in the middle of a custom project.
Sassafras: How would you describe the woman who wants to wear your designs (who's your target market)?
Gwen: Any woman who appreciates a well=made garment and wants to support local commerce. I want to make someone feel good about themselves and what they are wearing. I think I provide a niche for those who can't find what they're looking for elsewhere!
Sassafras: You also have a rack of vintage clothing for sale at Sassafras. What was your first vintage piece that you purchased and where did you get it?
Gwen: I'm pretty sure it was this awful 70's polyester baby blue and white polka dotted dress. I used to buy a lot of vintage t0shirts from the kids' department (oh, those days are long gone!) and I was really into these baby blue corduroy Levi's bell-bottoms I used to wear. I still regret selling them at the Red Light years ago!
Sassafras: When you're not designing, how do you enjoy spending your time?
Gwen: I have a 7-month-old black lab mix puppy that I'm raising. She's so much fun! I also started ballet dancing again and I play bass guitar. I like to sail with my brother and want to start racing this Summer! I have a lot of activities!
Sassafras: What styles can we expect to see from Lekkerlife in the future?
Gwen: Expect a new line this fall that will be mostly black, yellow, and gray with wools and silk! It's going to be really modern, hopefully.
